Giulio Caccini, “Dolcissimo sospiro”
Performers: Daniel Thomson, tenor
Terry McKenna, 10-course lute
Source: Giulio Caccini, Le nuove musiche. Florence: Marescotti, 1602.
Text and English Translation:
Dolcissimo sospiro Sweetest sigh
ch’esci da quella bocca, which comes from that mouth,
ove d’amor ogni dolcezza fiocca. where love’s every sweetness showers down.
Deh, vieni a raddolcire Ah, come to soften
l’amaro mio dolore. the bitterness of my pain.
Ecco, ch’io t’apro il core, Look, I open my heart to you,
ma, folle, a chi ridico il mio martire? but, [I am] a fool, to whom do I repeat my martyrdom?
Ad’un sospiro errante, To a wandering sigh,
che forse vola in sen ad altro amante. which perhaps flies to the bosom of another lover.
