Text and English Translation:

Villanella ch’all’acqua vai                              The country lass who goes for the water,

Moro per te e tu non lo sai                             I die for you and you do not know it.

Ahime ahime ch’io moro mirand’a te.            Alas, alas, to the end I die gazing at you.

Quando vai con la lancella                            When you go with a certain measure,

Pari Regina e non villanella                           resembling a Queen and not a country lass,

Ahime ahime ch’io moro mirand’a te.            Alas, alas, to the end I die gazing at you.

Cossi pari tra l’altre belle                               So equal amongst the other beauties,

Come la luna mezzo le stelle                         like the moon amidst the stars.

Ahime ahime ch’io moro mirand’a te.            Alas, alas, to the end I die gazing at you.

Non importa l’essere nata                              It does not matter [if] she is born

Mezz’a no bosco & aggratiata                        in the middle of the woods and without grace.

Ahime ahime ch’io moro mirand’a te.            Alas, alas, to the end I die gazing at you.
